Clay & Play: Air-dry clay workshop

NZD $20.00
  • Duration: 60 Minutes (approx.)
  • Location: Wellington

Clay is the oldest known ceramic material. Some of the earliest pottery shards have been dated to around 14,000 BC, and clay tablets were the first known writing medium.

But it is not only a medium to create beautiful objects and artworks: clay is a natural resource that provides children with many opportunities to be creative and expressive. There is no right or wrong way with clay! It is a wonderful medium for developing sensory, cognitive, and social skills.

Join one of the 2 sessions delivered by Kirsty on Wednesday 9 October, at Te Papa. Each session is an hour long and provides all materials needed to create one whole air-dry clay figurine to take home.

Session 1: 10.15 - 11.15 - Flower Bowl, for kids aged 6 to 8

Session 2: 11.30 - 12.30 - Sea Urchin. for kids aged 9 to 12

$20 per kid, adult accompanying the child do not need to book. Booking required. Please take along a box to carry away your clay artwork, once the session has ended, as the clay will still be soft.

About Kirsty Morison: Kirsty's work is inspired by the patterns, shapes, and textures of the natural world and found objects. With over 30 years of experience in creative fields of textile, interior and graphic design, she likes to bring all these skills into the world of ceramics, paying careful attention to detail, especially the subtle, tactile qualities of the surface decoration of each piece. With a background in Textile Design, the surface pattern of Kirsty's ceramics becomes the ideal area to pay special attention to, whether it be texture embossed into the clay, or effects achieved through layering and applying slips and glazes.
